Hi all,

At the last meetup I heard a few people mention about a lab (virtual? physical?) where one could test their android apps on real hardware and pay for the time to do so. Can someone tell me the name of that place and where it's located?

Also being a newbie on Android development, are there significant differences between various Android hardware models? Of course the OS version seems to matter but do carrier specific phones (i.e. Verizon vs T-Mobile) differ much against unlocked 'dev' phones when testing apps?

Any advice on this would be much appreciated. Just curious how large the compatibility matrix is when dev and testing an app.

Thanks!
Amit

Timely post... I just got this highly relevant email from the SV Android group. There are plans in the works for a lab where you can hold the HW you are testing.

Cheers!

You have a few options.
First, there's DeviceAnywhere, which has been mentioned. http://www.deviceanyw...
This is also marketed through MotoDev. I haven't used their service, mostly because I figured it would go only so far. I cannot see how advanced features such as sensors, camera preview and resistive vs. capacitive screens could be tested in such a setting. I can only imagine how painful debugging might be.

If two counts as a series - Google has held a series of Lab sessions around the western hemisphere. The first set of sessions last fall, and upcoming, the following:

I understand all spots are taken though. I went to the first event in Mountain View last year, and it pretty much met my expectations: A room full of developers with their heads down checking their products on handsets (and USB cables) that were rotated so everybody could try out the variety of devices on hand. From the top of my head... they had the HTC Magic, HTC Tatoo, Motorola Droid, Samsung Behold II, LG Eve
