Learn how to develop for Android, beyond the HelloWorld

This location is shown only to members

While many of our members are Android gurus, there are quite a few of us who yet have to take the plunge and get our hands dirty with Android development.

Marko Gargenta, who is responsible for Android training at Marakana (and happens to be my brother), offered to show us how to build a real-world (not HelloWorld) Android application from scratch in around two hours.

You can either sit back, relax, and enjoy the show... or you can take a more active role, and follow along, building your own version of the app. If you opt for the latter, you need to bring your own laptop - already configured with the Android SDK (including Eclipse)- though there may be some classroom workstations for our use.

For those of you that are already proficient with Android, you may still want to swing by, share your wisdom with the fellow attendees, and network with others in the Android community.

Marakana will provide drinks and pizzas for this event and we'll give a way some free Android books.

Because the space is limited, make sure you RSVP sooner... rather than later if you want to reserve your seat.

See you on Oct 8th.

Does anyone have a recommended Android book that they particularly like?

Back in the day, I read the "Hello Android" by Ed Burnette, which I liked, but there are many others that are good. With that said, we'll be giving away some Android books at this meetup :-)

Many thanks for the presentation (and pizza).

I like the suggestion made about continuing these sorts of quick-hit courses, each with a different twist on developing Android apps (SQL tips, graphics and gaming, etc). If we walk through an application each meeting, with source code provided beforehand, I think it would go a long way.

A great hands-on course. Thanks, Marko!

There was a question about how to update Android devices to 1.6. If you've got an Android Dev Phone 1 or if you have an HTC Dream from Google I/O, you can get new images from: http://developer.htc.com/ Click one of the images on the right side of the screen and then (try to) follow the (awfully written) instructions.

Thanks to the Gargenta brothers for taking so much trouble to do this. If I were you, I'd charge people $5-$15 per session, to help in costs for pizza/drinks and that way it would be beneficial for both. One of the reasons I came was that not too many Android meetup groups go thru the trouble of going thru some sort of training without asking for hundreds of dollars. Mostly what we see is demos of apps, marketing of products and/or job announcements. If we got people to pay a small amount (ie if we couldnt get sponsors) we could have more people do these kinds of talks, for eg: I wanted to know if someone could do an intro to openGL programming, or gaming on Android, or talking about sound/video/graphics and do some more "howto" sessions. I know a lot of people are reluctant to doing this for free cause its really a training session and a lot of work goes into this. But for a small price it might be beneficial. People wont mind paying a little to get more out of this.

Covered a _lot_ of territory in a short time. As a complete noob, I was only able to keep up for about 30 minutes until I fell of the back of the train and got lost, but I'll pick it back up by reviewing the video (and _Thank you_ for doing the video). Marko is a very knowledgeable, personable and well-organized presenter.

A very nicely done class. Thank you, Marko! Much of this was review for me, but I still learned lots of good tips and tricks along the way. For a new platform like Android, it's especially important and useful to see how other developers approach projects and structure their code, and I liked hearing Marko's side comments about that.

This was the best format in my opinion to get off the ground on Android and truly beyond the hello world! Great job for the organizers and presenter. Bravo guys.
